System Utilities → System Tools → System Startup Shutdown

Not only is it faster to just click a desktop icon but my system responds *immediately* & shuts down!! Love it :)

Sorry about that, I forgot it was command line based and Windows NT CMD
IS nearly the same as XP CMD
