Avi2Dvd by Tassos Karidis Home and Hobby → DVDs → DVD Copy - Rippers
Avi2Dvd is an all-in-one tool to convert with just few clicks an Avi/Ogm/Mkv/Wmv/Dvd to Dvd/Svcd/Vcd. Supports multiple audio streams and up to three textual external subtitles. Supports DV-AVI videos, so it can handle captured avi's from digital video cameras....

This is advertised as absolutely free but in fact the free version inserts a watermark ruining the copy. In my view, this is falsely described.

Buddyboy you mentioned "commercial movies" in another topic, if you are trying to copy/convert copyrighted material that watermark is coming from the source NOT this program.
Avi2Dvd is on the Pricelessware software list compiled by the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup. There is absolutely NO WAY it's anything but TRUE FREEWARE. That newsgroup's definition of freeware is so restricted they'd scream blue murder if they saw a watermark!

I have Windows XP Home, SP2. I must admit that I did not see a watermark on any copy from this programme because I did not make a copy when I read in the downloaded programme notes that the free version contains a watermark unless I upgrade to the paid version. In that it is the programme itself telling me I will get a watermark, I don't think it is from the source.
So far I have downloaded quite a few "freeware" converters (not all from FreewareHome) that in fact have severe restrictions, again unless I buy the paid version. Some limit the time copied to 10 minutes. It may be free but ten minutes is demonstrably useless. It's like printing the corner of a photograph - free but useless.
Other programmes place a watermark in their free version - this is not the only one, believe me. However, like this one, they all clearly state that in their notes so I have yet to find a free programme that works and am still actively looking. I have seen other posters making similar comments about these type of programmes so I know it's a common issue.
I have a lower level version of Nero which came with my computer but which tells me I need to upgrade to copy DVDs. I have a programme, Moyea DVD Ripper, which rips the DVDs effectively into .avi files. I do believe Nero will burn MPEG files to DVD once the conversion from .avi has been done, so a conversion programme from .avi to mpeg should do the trick. I assume I am correct that mpegs play on commercial players.
