Blender 3D by Blender Foundation Graphics → 3D Graphics
Blender is the first, and only, fully integrated 3D graphics creation suite allowing modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, realtime interactive 3D and game creation and playback with cross-platform compatibility - all in one tidy, downloadable package....

Everything you need to get started in 3D modelling is here. It really is an incredibly powerful freeware.
CAVEAT: The interface is NOT intuitive - you will need to spend some time learning this software, but the payback comes with the powerful modelling and animating tools which Blender offers.
There are a lot of tutorials, manuals, and free models waiting for you and if you are serious about 3D modelling I cannot recommend Blender highly enough.

I've been using blender for a year and a half now, the first few months of learning was rough, but once I got the hang of it, wow...I can't believe it's free, totally the most awesome graphics program I've ever had. And I'm a professional artist, don't let the word free make you think this is an toy,

'And I'm a professional artist'
I think this really helps the learning curve here. There are a lot of functions and concepts which may come second nature to someone in the industry (arts), but not to someone who is about to just "dabble" in it. You can only go so far before some more teaching is required. Still, incredible that its free. Good to try if 'Maya' seems interesting to you.
