All changes are displayed in realtime, so tail is perfect for watching log files. For Windows there's no tail command. But there are many good replacements for tail out there. LogExpert is one of these tail programs. It adds some nice features which are very useful if you have to work with log files.

WinContig is an easy-to-use, stand-alone, defragmentation tool that doesn't create any installation directories or Registry entries on your computer. We often need to use applications which don't require any user input, but show bothersome interfaces or prompts. Yeah, I'm talking about batch files as well :) As you know, it's impossible to completely hide these apps. They can just be minimized, but can't become invisible without using other methods - javascript, vbscript etc. HideApp is an utility coded in VB.net capable of generating shortcuts which will start your applications in background, thus without any on-screen console or interface.

TrID is a utility designed to identify file types from their binary signatures. While there are similar utilities with hard coded rules, TriID has no such rules. Instead, it is extensible and can be trained to recognize new formats in a fast and automatic way. Wildcards can be used to scan groups of files, entire folders, etc. In addition, using the switch -ae will instruct TrID to add the guessed extensions to the filenames. This comes in handy, for example, when working with files recovered by data rescue softwares. To get you started, the current library of definitions is up to 3799 file types and growing fast.

» Folder2Junction 1.0

Folder2Junction moves a folder to a new location, then makes a NTFS junction in the folder's original location pointing to its new location. NTFS junctions are like wormholes in the file system. Folder2Junction was created so that it would be easier to move sensitive files to an encrypted disk (for example, using TrueCrypt) while keeping junctions in the files' original unencrypted location to maintain ease-of-access and compatibility with applications.
IMPORTANT NOTES: only works on NTFS disks with VISTA.

TrID is a utility designed to identify file types from their binary signatures. There are similar utilities with hard coded rules, TriID has none, it is extensible and can be trained to recognize new formats in a fast and automatic way. TrID uses an XML-based database of definitions which describe recurring patterns for supported file types. N.B. You need to download the TrID's package (which contains over 1400 file type definitions) to use this program and it will also run on other versions of Windows if the .NET framework is installed.
Another place to check is "WhatIs Every File Format in the World" they currently list 3,181 file formats!
FH advice: In Windows Explorer - "View" menu - "Folder Options" - "View" tab - change the dangerous MS defaults for "Files & Folders". CHECK "Show all files", UNcheck "Hide file extensions...". Files &/or their extensions should NEVER be hidden, that's how a virus/worm can spread!

This command line program waits until the file, specified as a parameter, can be opened exclusively. It can be used in bat-files if you want to process (copy, delete etc) a file that is currently opened by another program. WaitForFile will wait indefinitely (and that is a long time!) until it can open the requested file.

For more advanced users! This utility is used to get information on the usage of your drive, by grouping similar extensions and showing how they are distrubuted on your hard disk. This is a completely different kind of analisis that you have seen! So you can "discover" forgotten files and then decide if they are worth existing... Also good to get detailed information on users files on small networks. Results can be exported to the clipboard (for Excel, Word, printing etc.)
